- For larger residential building work, confirm the contractor carries the home-building / domestic-building insurance your state requires before you pay a deposit. It is what protects you if the work is left unfinished or defective.
- Ask to see a portfolio of completed work like yours, plus recent references you can contact.
- Check the credentials and registrations that matter for this work, and that they are current.
- Get a written, itemised quote with scope, assumptions and a staged payment schedule.

Verify before you hire
- Only an accredited installer can sign off a system for the government STC rebate: installer accreditation is run by Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA, which took over from the Clean Energy Council). Verify it, plus a current state electrical licence.
- Panels and inverter should be on the Clean Energy Council approved product lists, and the install must meet AS/NZS 5033 (PV arrays) and AS/NZS 4777 (grid connection).
- Check the retailer is a signatory to the Clean Energy Council's Solar Retailer Code of Conduct (Approved Seller) for stronger warranties and conduct.
- Confirm public liability insurance and a valid ABN on the ABN Lookup (abr.business.gov.au), and get the product and workmanship warranties in writing.
Warning signs of a dodgy tradie
- Can't show installer accreditation or a state electrical licence: without accreditation you lose the rebate and the install may be unsafe.
- Uses panels or an inverter that aren't on the Clean Energy Council approved lists.
- A hard-sell, door-to-door pitch with a 'today only' discount and a big up-front deposit.
- Warranties backed only by a reseller rather than the actual manufacturer.
