- Electrical work must be done by a licensed electrician in every state and territory: verify the electrical licence with the regulator (Energy Safe Victoria, NSW Fair Trading, the Electrical Safety Office in Qld, Building and Energy in WA, or Consumer and Business Services in SA).
- After the job the electrician must issue a Certificate of Electrical Safety (Victoria) or Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (NSW): confirm you'll get one, as you may need it to sell or insure the home.
- Check they carry public liability insurance and have a valid ABN on the ABN Lookup (abr.business.gov.au).
- For a switchboard upgrade or rewire, ask to see comparable completed jobs and read recent reviews.
Warning signs of a dodgy tradie
- Won't provide an electrical licence number, or only an apprentice attends with no licensed electrician supervising.
